The summer holidays & Christmas for me is all about spending time with my family & friends, and having some “down time.”
This often means late nights, sometimes, not eating as well as I should, and I know that there is alcohol involved in the mix “somewhere............” (After all it is the season to be merry!!! – As if I really need an excuse.)
I have put some tips together to manage this “season” a little more comfortably for myself & hopefully they may work for you as well.
Managing your dates & appointments: Sometimes you really have to say NO! – I love being busy at this time of year, but sometimes I really & truly have too many parties / business functions / networking functions / kids school events / end of year concerts – parties to attend.
· Prioritise & work out which ones you really need to attend.
· Which ones you want to attend.
· Make a decision about the others.........will the world fall apart if you do not attend.
· What is more important to you.........your sanity & some “down time” or attending this event.
o When I put it into perspective like this, it became rather obvious what I needed to do to look after my health & wellbeing. (Still do not get it right all the time, but I am working on it.........)
Food & alcohol: Oh so many scrummy, yummy, salty, sugary, unhealthy (but tastes fantastic) things to eat (which in a million years, if it was not Christmas & end of year I would never eat!!!)
· Where possible eat a light snack or something more substantial before you go..........this way you will be less tempted.
· If you will power is NOT good, eat one healthy item to one unhealthy one (my nutritionist & naturopath friends will go MAD at this point!) – But let’s be realistic here, either you have will power or you do not. – Far better to attempt to eat some healthy food, than feel guilty for all the junk you have consumed, and then eat more, because you feel bad about what you have done...........(Yep, I have to say, I’ve been there in the past.)
· I have in the past, found myself drinking more in the silly season than I would usually do, at a time that I really cannot afford to feel under the weather the next day. As there is another event that I will have to attend...
· Time & experience has taught me the valuable lesson of WATER. The unsung wonder drug of the 21st century. Let me fill you in on this “wonder drug” it’s amazing healing properties:
o Water will help the liver to function correctly as the major detoxifying organ of the body. Reducing the side effects of alcohol dehydration & potentially alcohol poisoning (which is what a hangover is the prelude too....).
o Water keeps the brain hydrated, reducing headaches, stress, tiredness (in other words hangover symptoms..........)
o Keeps the digestive system operating at it’s peak, reducing the chances of feeling “sluggish” in the mornings........or for that matter, for some people all day.
o A well hydrated body will mean that your skin will look better & you will have a fighting chance of less wrinkles.
· What does this mean to you?? – Consider having one or two water’s (or at least non-alcoholic drinks) between each alcoholic drink. – Easier on your wallet as well.......
Take care of yourselves over this season. For more information on how I may be of assistance to you, please see www.kerryheritage.com.au/kinesiologyhtml If you need a little more in the way of stress management, there are a number of ways I may be of assistance to you.
I will be working up to 22 December, then be taking a break with my family. Returning to work on 11 January 2010. |
